Compare pcr tubes and strips

Rows that differ are in bold.

Choose by volume and application first, then by cap, centrifuge rating and material.

Step 1: Volume and application

TubeVolumesTypical use
PCR tubes and strips0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 mlPCR and qPCR in a thermal cycler
Microcentrifuge tubes0.5, 1.5, 2.0 and 5.0 mlSmall-volume spins, storage, sample prep
Conical centrifuge tubes10, 15 and 50 mlCell pellets, extractions, general lab work
Plastic test tubes5 to 15 ml (12 × 75 to 16 × 150 mm)General testing and sample handling
Cryovials0.5 to 10 mlFrozen storage at -80 °C or in liquid nitrogen vapour

Step 2: Cap type

  • Snap and flat caps: quick one-hand opening; flat caps are easy to label.
  • Safe-lock caps: lock shut, so they do not pop open in the centrifuge or on a heating block.
  • Screw caps: the tightest seal for transport and storage.
  • PCR caps: flat caps for optical reading in qPCR; convex (domed) caps for standard PCR.

Step 3: Centrifuge rating

Every tube has a maximum RCF (× g). Tubes in this range are rated 8,000 to 15,000 × g. Your centrifuge shows rpm or × g; to convert, RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × rotor radius in cm × rpm².

Step 4: Material

Polypropylene (PP) resists most chemicals and can be autoclaved at 121 °C. Polystyrene (PS) is clear and rigid but is not autoclavable and does not resist organic solvents; the plastic test tubes in this range are PS. Check the material on each product page.

Cryogenic storage

Store cryovials in the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen rather than in the liquid, which can seep into a vial and expand on thawing. External-thread caps keep the threads away from the sample; internal-thread vials take less space in a box. Choose a cryovial box with the right well size for 1.8/2 ml, 5 ml, 10/15 ml or 50 ml tubes.

Questions buyers ask

0.1 ml or 0.2 ml PCR tubes?

0.1 ml (low-profile) tubes fit low-profile and fast cycler blocks; 0.2 ml tubes fit standard blocks. Check your cycler before ordering.

Why choose white PCR tubes?

White tubes reflect fluorescence back to the detector and reduce crosstalk, which helps in qPCR. Clear tubes let you see the liquid.

Flat or convex caps?

Flat caps are needed for optical reading in qPCR and are easy to label. Convex (domed) caps suit standard PCR.

Separate or hinged strip caps?

Hinged caps stay attached to the strip, so they cannot get lost or mixed up. Separate cap strips let you open one strip without disturbing others.
