Compare reagent bottles

Rows that differ are in bold.

Three choices matter: the material, the mouth and the colour.

Step 1: Material

MaterialGood forAutoclavable
Polypropylene (PP)Aqueous solutions, acids and bases; unbreakableYes, at 121 °C
HDPEAqueous solutions, acids and bases; tough, and less brittle in the coldNo

Step 2: Mouth

  • Narrow mouth bottles pour liquids with less spilling.
  • Wide mouth bottles make it easy to fill and empty powders, solids and viscous samples.

Step 3: Clear or brown

Use brown bottles for light-sensitive reagents. Use clear (natural) bottles when you need to see the contents and fill level.

Questions buyers ask

PP or HDPE reagent bottle?

Both resist aqueous solutions, acids and bases. PP can be autoclaved at 121 °C; HDPE cannot, but it is tough and less brittle in the cold.

Wide or narrow mouth?

Narrow mouth bottles pour liquids with less spilling. Wide mouth bottles are easier to fill with powders, solids or viscous samples.

Are brown plastic bottles enough for light-sensitive reagents?

Brown bottles reduce light exposure. For strongly light-sensitive substances, amber glass gives more protection.
