Choose the plate type for the job first: PCR or immunoassay. Then pick the format, well volume and colour.

Step 1: PCR plates: skirt and well volume

SkirtChoose it when
Non-skirtedManual work on most standard thermal cycler blocks; the plate can be cut into sections
Semi-skirtedYou want more rigidity and some robotic handling
Full-skirtedRobotic handling, plate sealers and automated readers

0.1 ml (low-profile) wells suit low-profile and fast cycler blocks; 0.2 ml wells suit standard blocks. Check your cycler block before ordering. White wells reflect more light and are preferred for qPCR; clear wells let you see the liquid. Seal PCR plates with sealing film.

Step 2: ELISA plates: binding and colour

ColourDetection
ClearColorimetric (absorbance) assays
BlackFluorescence; reduces background and crosstalk
WhiteLuminescence; reflects and maximises the signal

High binding surfaces suit antibodies and proteins at low concentration; medium binding suits larger molecules and reduces non-specific binding. The plates are made of detachable strips (8 × 12 or 12 × 8), so you only use the wells you need.

Step 3: Reservoirs

Reagent reservoirs (10 to 100 ml, plain or divided) hold reagents for multichannel pipetting.

Questions buyers ask

Medium or high binding ELISA plate?

High binding suits antibodies and proteins at low concentration. Medium binding suits larger molecules and can reduce non-specific background.

Clear, black or white ELISA plate?

Clear for colorimetric (absorbance) assays, black for fluorescence and white for luminescence.

8-well or 12-well strips?

Choose by how your samples are laid out. Detachable strips let you run only the wells you need and keep the rest.
