Choose by volume and application first, then by cap, centrifuge rating and material.
Step 1: Volume and application
| Tube | Volumes | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| PCR tubes and strips | 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5 ml | PCR and qPCR in a thermal cycler |
| Microcentrifuge tubes | 0.5, 1.5, 2.0 and 5.0 ml | Small-volume spins, storage, sample prep |
| Conical centrifuge tubes | 10, 15 and 50 ml | Cell pellets, extractions, general lab work |
| Plastic test tubes | 5 to 15 ml (12 × 75 to 16 × 150 mm) | General testing and sample handling |
| Cryovials | 0.5 to 10 ml | Frozen storage at -80 °C or in liquid nitrogen vapour |
Step 2: Cap type
- Snap and flat caps: quick one-hand opening; flat caps are easy to label.
- Safe-lock caps: lock shut, so they do not pop open in the centrifuge or on a heating block.
- Screw caps: the tightest seal for transport and storage.
- PCR caps: flat caps for optical reading in qPCR; convex (domed) caps for standard PCR.
Step 3: Centrifuge rating
Every tube has a maximum RCF (× g). Tubes in this range are rated 8,000 to 15,000 × g. Your centrifuge shows rpm or × g; to convert, RCF = 1.118 × 10⁻⁵ × rotor radius in cm × rpm².
Step 4: Material
Polypropylene (PP) resists most chemicals and can be autoclaved at 121 °C. Polystyrene (PS) is clear and rigid but is not autoclavable and does not resist organic solvents; the plastic test tubes in this range are PS. Check the material on each product page.
Cryogenic storage
Store cryovials in the vapour phase of liquid nitrogen rather than in the liquid, which can seep into a vial and expand on thawing. External-thread caps keep the threads away from the sample; internal-thread vials take less space in a box. Choose a cryovial box with the right well size for 1.8/2 ml, 5 ml, 10/15 ml or 50 ml tubes.
Questions buyers ask
Which tubes does the PCR rack hold?
It has 96 positions in an 8 × 12 layout for PCR tubes and strips.
Can I set up reactions on ice with this rack?
The rack holds tubes upright on the bench; for cooling, stand it on ice or a cooling block as your protocol requires.
Can I order fewer than 270 racks?
The rack is listed in packs of 270. Email sales@erohe-lab.com if you need a smaller quantity.
