Compare vial inserts

Rows that differ are in bold.

An insert is a small glass tube that sits inside a standard 2 ml vial. It keeps a small sample within reach of the autosampler needle, so you can inject from 150 to 300 µl without wasting sample.

Step 1: Match the insert to the vial neck

VialInsert sizeVolumes in this range
8-425 screw vials31 × 5 mm or 29 × 5 mm150 µl and 250 µl
9 mm short-thread vials31 × 6 mm or 29 × 5.7 mm250 µl and 300 µl

The insert has to sit straight in the vial neck. An insert that is too narrow can tilt and the needle may hit the glass; one that is too wide will not go in. The normal vial cap closes over the insert.

Step 2: Bottom shape

TypeChoose it when
Flat bottomYou want the largest volume and the lowest price per piece
Conical bottomThe sample is very small: liquid collects in the tip, so the needle can draw almost all of it
Conical interior with polymer feetYou want a conical insert that stands on plastic feet, which keep it centred in the vial and cushion it

Step 3: Needle depth

Check the needle height setting on your autosampler. The needle must stop above the bottom of the insert; with a conical insert it can go lower than with a flat one. Run a test injection with a blank before a sequence.

One-piece alternative

If you prefer not to assemble inserts, the 9 mm and 11 mm vial ranges include 0.3 ml vials with a base-bonded micro-insert built in.

Inserts are sold in packs of 100.

Questions buyers ask

Which insert fits my vial?

Inserts for 8-425 vials are 31 × 5 mm or 29 × 5 mm; inserts for 9 mm short-thread vials are 31 × 6 mm or 29 × 5.7 mm. Match the insert to the vial neck.

Flat or conical insert?

Flat inserts hold the most volume. Conical inserts collect the sample in the tip so the needle can draw nearly all of it, which suits the smallest samples.

Do I need a different cap when using an insert?

No. The normal cap for the vial closes over the insert.

What is the minimum sample I can inject from an insert?

It depends on the insert type and your autosampler needle depth. Conical inserts leave the least residual volume; run a blank to set the needle height.
